Innovative Algorithms: Embedded & DSP Systems

I spent several years at Innovative Algorithms working on unattended ground sensor systems for long-duration, low-power operation in the field. The work focused on sensing, embedded software, and RF-connected systems, with an emphasis on reliability, power efficiency outside controlled environments.

Overview

Details

I contributed to the development of multiple sensor platforms, including systems capable of detecting activity at ~200 meters, operating for 36+ months on battery, and maintaining radio links out to ~15 km. Reaching that combination of range, lifetime, and communication reliability required coordination across analog design, embedded software, RF behavior, and system architecture. A significant part of my work involved developing and refining signal processing approaches for seismic and acoustic sensors, implemented on resource-constrained MCUs. The focus was not just detection performance, but maintaining stability across changing environmental conditions and limiting false positives. Beyond new development, I redesigned legacy sensor platforms to improve sensing performance and extend battery life, and introduced more modular approaches supporting different battery configurations and RF communication modes. During COVID-era supply chain disruptions, I led efforts to rework hardware and firmware around available components. These redesigns required full revalidation, but in several cases resulted in improved performance or expanded feature sets. I also served as an embedded and DSP subject matter resource for internal teams and external clients, supporting design reviews, feasibility discussions, and debugging efforts. In parallel, I helped establish manufacturing and test procedures to improve reliability and consistency during production. One of the larger platform efforts I worked on was the R5 system, designed to improve interoperability with third-party cameras, sensors, and aerial systems.
